Find Comfort in the Discomfort

by Stella Whalen

Uncomfortable situations are commonly avoided at all costs by people in society. Technology has come in very handy to anyone abstaining from human interactions. The sound of voices no longer charges subway stations, airports or waiting lobbies. Instead, heads are down, AirPods are in, phones are in hand and voices are off.

I don't know when people began to hate the discomfort of meeting strangers, but it's rather a tragedy to me because in the same place of discomfort is where you find the most growth. People were designed to indulge in uncomfortable situations. Just like with failure, athletes' biggest growth comes in overcoming unbearable emotions.

Apart from the mental side of athletics, pushing one's body to the maximum amount of pain and tolerance goes against all common sense. Willingly placing yourself in uncomfortable situations is not appealing to most, but is absolutely necessary if you want to excel in your sport. Comfort zones are where hard work is lost and courage is defeated. Success takes a mind inclined to do the impossible. God calls us to a faith that surpasses all understanding. In our sports, on our teams, at school, in society and on the subway, we are called to step out of our comfort zones and be the light of the world. Make discomfort the place you find the most comfort in, as it is the place of most fulfillment.
